Virtualisation is reducing server costs
Judging by recent coverage in the IT press, virtualisation is one of the hottest technologies around. But what does it do and, more importantly, what does it have to offer a small business?
Virtualisation allows multiple virtual machines, with different operating systems to run in isolation, simultaneously on the same physical machine. Each virtual machine has its own set of virtual hardware (e.g. RAM, CPU, etc.) upon which an operating system and applications are loaded.
Benefits include:-
- Multiple operating systems allow legacy applications to be run without dedicating hardware.
- Reduction of the number of physical servers required.
- Reduction in power utilisation, cooling requirements and floor space.
- Server resources are pooled, allowing them to be allocated as required.
